Toyota Prius is sold out so you wont get one of those any time soon, or until the new generation comes out. Priuses also look little "strange" to say it in a nice way and we are not the biggest fans of the Toyota design to begin with. We cant say that VW Jetta will win the design of the year award but if it looks decent, gets you 29/40 miles per gallon and brings you $1300 from the US government that you may agree that its not a bad deal at all.
Buyers of Volkswagen Jetta TDI vehicles eligible for a $1300 Federal Tax Credit
HERNDON, Va.-Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced that buyers of the Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen are eligible for a $1,300 Federal Income Tax Credit.
The clean diesel Jetta qualifies under the Advanced Lean Burn Technology Motor Vehicle income tax credit. That would bring the price premium for the diesel to only $700 over a comparable Jetta with a gas engine. The EPA has rated the Jetta at 29/40mpg city highway with a 6-speed DSG gearbox. Real world numbers are likely to be closer to the low 40s for most drivers, but we'll be finding out for ourselves soon.

AMCI studies show MPG of 38 and 44. I also think that after a 10,000 mile breakin you can get over 50/highway. The 2006s did. This car is super low emissions, and approved for CA, the toughest place for emission standards. It has 3 cata/converters and a partical filter. Plus the carefree maintence is included.

Great points Mike. I agree that VW has a winner with this one and I really hope they will get diesel some publicity in USA since Americans seem to be very anti-diesel so whatever reason :(

I’m quite skeptic about 50mpg but even 40mpg is really step ahead. If starting price is the same as the one with gas-engine model this car will save money for you from the very first day. In case Jetta TDI price = Jetta FSI price + $3000 and you do 15000 per year, you will start save money after more than 4 years.
