A little bit over a month ago, we were extremely excited that BMW was close to officially announcing the development of the new ultra-light, ultra-fast, pure-performance E92 BMW M3 CSL with planned release in 2010. However, it seems that recently things at BMW took a “wrong” turn somehow. “Wrong”, as in “this is not what BMW enthusiasts are expecting from the brand that is the performance benchmark”.
Recently, we blogged about BMW scrapping the project for resurrecting one of the true M icons, the M1. Well, it seems the M division is on a roll the last few days, as just recently the M division boss, Luwig Willisch, has confirmed that the M3 CSL project is getting shelved as well! The M division is to focus on M-ing the X line-up instead. It seems that this is what the market is more interested in and will probably sell easier than the M3 CSL. Apparently, BMW financial analysts are playing it safe, thinking that since the Porsche Cayenne is selling so well, along with the ML 63 AMG, BMW can get a big piece of the high-performance SUV market.
We say good-bye to another car that could have been something special. Here is a artist speculation of what the E92 M3 CSL could have looked like.
